(FILA Global) - FILA sponsored athlete Ashleigh Barty and partner Demi Schuurs captured the Women’s Doubles Title Sunday in Rome at the 2018 Italian Open. The victory comes in the pair’s first tournament played together and featured a hand full of impressive comeback victories in route to the title.
“I think it was important for us to keep chipping away,” said Barty, of the challenges faced throughout the tournament.
The eighth seeded Barty/Schuurs faced early deficits in both their second and quarterfinal round matches, battling back from a set down in each to advance. Coming back from an early break down in the championship match, the duo won the final six games of the match to secure the title in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 over second seeded Barbora Strýcová /Andrea Sestini Hlaváčková.
“We knew that when you have a lead and it gets tight, you start to feel it a bit more. It was a very good comeback in the second set, but I think a very clean match overall, “Barty noted after securing the win.
This win marks Barty’s second doubles title of the season, coming just over a month after winning at the Miami Open in April. Barty will move into the 5thoverall spot in the WTA Doubles Rankings, a new career high.
