Kiki Bertens Captures Clay Court Crown in Madrid

(FILA Global) - FILA sponsored tennis player Kiki Bertens capped off a dominating week of tennis Saturday in Madrid, defeating Simona Halep 6-4, 6-4 to capture the Mutua Madrid Open ladies title. The win is Bertens’ ninth career WTA singles victory and first Premier Mandatory title.

Bertens stormed past Katerina Siniakova, Jelena Ostapenko, Anastasija Sevastova, Petra Kvitova and Sloane Stephens - all without losing a set - en route to taking out the former World No. 1 Halep in a thrilling final. The win adds to an already impressive 2019 season for Bertens, who won the St. Petersburg title and had semifinal appearances in both Sydney and Stuttgart.

“I am really proud of this week. I played some good tennis. No. 4 in the world on Monday…It is just all amazing things.”

Bertens will reach a new career-high ranking of No. 4 in the WTA standings heading into the remainder of the clay court swing in Rome and Paris.
