(FILA Global) - FILA sponsored tennis player Sofia Kenin, who brought home her first Tour-level doubles title last week in doubles at Auckland, captured her maiden WTA singles title at the Hobart International after defeating Anna Karolína Schmiedlová 6-3, 6-0. Kenin defeated No. 1 seed Caroline Garcia, Ons Jabeur, Kirsten Flipkens [7] and Alizé Cornet [6] en route to the title match.
The 20-year-old is expected to move back into the WTA Top 50 with the win – and eclipse her career-high ranking of No. 48, which she secured in October of 2018. Up next for Kenin will be the Australian Open, where she begins play Monday against qualifier Veronika Kudermetova.
At the Sydney International, FILA sponsored tennis players Ashleigh Barty and Andreas Seppi both advanced to the tournament finals. Barty recorded impressive wins over Jelena Ostapenko [22], Simona Halep [1], Elise Mertens [10], and FILA sponsored Kiki Bertens [7] before falling to Petra Kvitova [8] in the final. She will play Luksika Kumkhum to kick-off the year’s first Grand Slam on Monday. Seppi notched wins this week over No. 1 seed Stefanos Tisitsipas and Diego Schwartzman en route to the final; he will look to build on last year’s success in Melbourne when he takes to the court Monday against Steve Johnson.
